Music workshops
I Got Rhythm workshops aim to broaden children's understanding and enjoyment of music from around the world, and are designed to encourage creative thought and expression. Using jazz, African music, gospel, soul, funk and Latin music for inspiration, songs and instrumental pieces are written by the class from a series of fun warm-ups, games and brain-storming sessions often geared towards an end of workshop performance.
How long do workshops last?
The workshops can last from a one hour session, or anything up to a four-day block project. They can also be on-going over a number of weeks, and may involve classes or groups of up to 30 children at a time.
Do we have to have our own instruments?
We can provide a range of instruments and the children can bring their own. We often use those that are owned by the school, youth group etc
What will we do in a workshop?
The children will write their own songs around a theme of relevance and interest to the group, compose and perform an instrumental piece and learn an African song with actions. The words and music are both generated through the joint effort of the group. The workshops provide a unique method of song development which is inclusive and organic. We often work towards a final production to which friends, peers, parents, teachers and leaders can be invited. This can help keep the group focused and offer the chance to entertain and generate excitement as the time draws near!
What skills will we gain?
We recognise the importance an relevance of our workshops to the development of skills that form important elements of the revised curriculum for primary education, including;
- Thinking, problem solving and decision making
- Self management
- Working with others
- Being creative
- Managing information
New - Saturday Morning Music and Rhythm Workshops at I Got Rhythm
On Saturday mornings I Got Rhythm is offering workshops for children and young people.
5-8 year olds 10-10.50am, 9-12 year olds 11-11.50am
For 5-8 year olds workshops will focus on developing your child's musicality, rhythmic ability, co-ordination, listening skills and working together as a group. Through fun warm-ups children will develop in cofidence and get to know one another, then using hand-drums and percussion as well as ensemble singing, the group will gain an understanding of rhythm, listening to one another and group dynamics - all key skills that form the bedrock of muscianship. The group will work towards themed performances, which may be seasonal or developed through interests expressed by the group.
The 9-12 age group will further develop similiar themes to the younger group and in addition will begin to work on composition and song-writing tasks. They will bring together songs that have been developed through group work with everyone contributing to the final piece. Those who play instruments will be encouraged to bring them along and begin working as an ensemble using instruments and voice work. Recordings of rehearsed pieces will be made and these will be edited and made available to group members to take home. Again this group will work towards themed performances.
These workshops are really popular and are fabulously good fun.
Saturday Workshop sessions cost £5 per child with a £1 reduction for a sibling. Sessions are payable 6 weekly in advance. Places are limited to 10 participants per class and booking is essential.
